We had a lovely relaxing stay in the heart of Barcelona just outside the famous La Ramblas. The staff were very lovely and helpful, our bed was comfy and the breakfast was delicious. The shovers could do with a deep clean but it didn’t cause any major issues. The whole hotel has a really nice colonial style. There is a supermarket close by on the La Ramblas for local snacks. The rooftop terrace is amazing! We’ll definitely return.

The lobby bar is fantastic, Mar Tina made us some fantastic drinks and it’s an experience to watch her craft them! Go give it a try.

Back in the 19th century, Spain was a world superpower, and the dominant producer of tobacco products such as cigars. That was until the Spanish – American War of 1898, and with it the Spanish tobacco trade collapsed, and with it the global headquarters of that tobacco trade. Welcome to Hotel 1898, the repurposed global headquarters of that tobacco trade. The network of reception, car park, swimming pool, sauna, bars, restaurants, roof terrace and rooms, is testament to the imaginative use of space. Everything shouts past glories reborn, right down to bar and restaurant chits being presented in H1898 cigar boxes. However, what makes a good hotel fantastic, is not the infrastructure, but the people who make the hotel come alive. Good staff make a fantastic hotel. We had too many positive encounters to thank everybody, however a special shout out of thanks to is deserved: Saida the room service cleaner, a delight to interact with despite her broken Arabic/Spanish; Alex and Davide, the handymen who came to our rescue when the wheelchair broke; Rose who became the benchmark for a respectable cup of coffee; Chiara and her tale of Anglo/Argentinean rapprochement in Mendoza and the Andean foothills; the reception staff a constant source of good advice; and finally Ben, the Quality Manager who kept the whole show on the road. Ben demonstrated his attention to detail on the first morning, when he took the time to visit us at breakfast. Due to a misunderstanding, we had been allocated an unsuitable room; Ben resolved this in minutes and then went on to ensure that the rest of our stay was a delight. A delightful hotel with fantastic staff.

We stayed at 1898 end of April to beginning of May. Some positives and negatives on the hotel. Its location on Las Rambas is excellent. The hotel is well appointed , our room being a superior and was very comfortable. Breakfast is excellent and the team in there are really attentive. The reception team are helpful and professional. Sadly the roof top bar was closed one day due to heavy rain. The Spa , we didn’t use, but looks excellent too. The only negatives are the shower is located at the end of the bath and most of the water ends up dropping on the end rather than the person! A simple extension to the pipe would be perfect. Lastly the metro line which runs close by causes a deep rumbling every time it passes and that’s all night long. We enjoyed our trip to the city. We were here for the Andrea Bochelli concert at Palau Sant Jordi which was amazing.

Hotel was close to everything we needed in Barcelona. If destination from hotel was not at walkable distance, taxi was just at the front door. Hotel staff really friendly. Thank you for taking care of us for our anniversary. Hotel it self is in perfect shape. Highly recommend Hotel 1898!!
